Though I will never be as extreme as a lot of the radicals and “hippies” that are out there adapting how they live in order to make the tiniest carbon “footprint” possible on the world, I have started to pay closer attention to the amount of pollution and waste that is in the world today. Even just on a personal, local lever, you can see people’s disinterest and indifference in protecting our environment. Kids and adults alike who are too busy to dispose of their trash properly just throw it anywhere they want-regardless of anyone else or public space. It is adults like that who teach their kids the same habits, that it is “ok” to throw your waste anywhere and that it does not hurt anyone or anything.
If people cannot even care enough to keep their own neighborhood clean, what chance is there for the whole world? It takes a very special breed of person who is passionate beyond belief to care so much about something like the environment enough to fully commit to protecting it. Though I may not fully see eye to eye with everything that the so called Hippies do and say (and wear, for that matter), I completely respect their commitment to what they believe in.
Through the perseverance of like-minded individuals, the United States government and most of the world has started to recognize that measures need to be taken in order to protect our (shared) environment. Because the “greener” route is often more expensive and time consuming, few companies would voluntarily opt to take extra measures to reduce pollution and harmful substance spillage. But thanks to the focus citizens have put the environment, the government has started writing regulations and forming agencies to protect the world, like the Environmental Protection Agency.
Activities such as hydraulic fracturing, that are highly controversial yet largely beneficial, make people worry about the effects such things could have on the environment. Thanks to the awareness people put on the “fracking,” companies now must promote erosion control and utilize things like the compost filter sock to help reduce the chances of the environment getting severely harmed or polluted.
